Environment Policy

The Crown Spa Hotel, Scarborough emitted an average of 21.01 kg of CO2 for each occupied bedroom per night in 2006 this has been reduced to 19.05 kg during 2007; we are very pleased with this achievement. This is low for the industry however; we are not resting on out laurels; we intend to reduce this further by reducing, reusing items such as scrap paper and recycling where we can. This reduction can not take place without the help of the most important people our Customers.

Reducing

We ask all guest please consider the environment and reduce electrical consumption by not leaving electrical items on when not in use. Please turn lights out and televisions when not in use. In return we have installed low energy lighting throughout, LCD computer screens, fresh air conditioning in some areas, solar heat collectors within and on the roof of the building to reduce the energy required to heat water.

Reuse

We ask all guests to leave the towels that they do not require changing in the towel racks provided, all towels placed in the bath will be changed for fresh towels. Please do help reduce our water consumption by reporting dripping taps and please do not leave taps running unnecessarily.

In return we reuse most scrap paper, wood and many other materials.

Recycle

We ask all guests to hand in old newspapers and paper to reception so that they can be recycled. Any old newspapers or paper to be recycled in bedrooms please leave to the side of the bin in the bedroom area.

In return we recycle the following items:

1. Glass – All waste glass
2. Waste office paper - shredded in bin liners, separated from un-shredded.
3. Plastic containers from cleaning fluids etc – we remove caps and/or spray units. At present we cannot recycle the spray units but are investigating the caps.
4. Printer/toner cartridges – placed into original box wherever possible.
5. Cardboard - flattened.
6. Clean wood off-cuts - all except chipboard and MDF
7. Tin cans (steel) – we rinse and remove any paper label.
8. Plastic drinks bottles - caps removed, caps can be taken if bagged separately.
9. Lids from glass bottles - separate steel from other metals if possible.
10. Bedding, towels, surplus catering equipment etc. – we pass to a local charity.
11. Metal drinks cans and ring pulls- we crush and separate for other metals.
12. Unprocessed green matter will be composted; we generally compost 200kg per month, saving this matter going to landfill.
If you know of any area in the Hotel where we can improve on this please do speak to a duty manager; as this is where some of our best reduction ideas have come from.

Lastly Carbon Offset

We offer guests the opportunity to reduce the environmental impact of your stay, through working with Scarborough Fair Carbon, so that you can offset some or all of the carbon produced from their visit. Details can be obtained during your stay.
